Anyone who thinks that Color Consulting is exclusive to the female public is very mistaken. Men’s Personal Coloring not only exists and it’s increasingly on the rise.
More vain and concerned about the image they want to convey, men have have been looking the service frequently in recent years.
The increase in interest in the service only confirms what’s already seen in the fashion, beauty and retail market, which generated more than US$13 billion in revenue from men’s clothing in Brazil alone.
And, in fact, in a world taken over by social media, the concern about image becomes an important point.
Do you want to know more about Color Consulting for men and how it differs from Personal Coloring for women?
Be sure to read this article until the end, as I’ll reveal important aspects of male care.
What’s Men’s Personal Color Analysis?
As I said in this article, “Personal Color Analysis is a process in which we discover, through a comparative test with fabrics, which colors best harmonize with our beauty”.
In other words, we observe the skin’s reaction to certain color dimensions.
Although men have some peculiarities, such as the presence of a beard and mustache, and the absence of hair in some cases, the process for carrying out the test is the same for men and women.
To discover the set of colors that most enhances each person’s beauty, we analyzed four characteristics:
- Depth: whether the client looks better in light or dark colors
- Intensity: if it’s the intense or soft colors that value them most
- Temperature: whether the client looks better in warm or cool colors
- Contrast: the difference between light and dark in beauty.
Based on the results of these four variables, we’ll arrive at the color palette using the Expanded Seasonal Method of Personal Coloring, which is carried out in person.
If the test is carried out by Digital Studio Immagine Experience, that is, done 100% online, the consultant will analyze two characteristics of the man’s beauty to arrive at the color palette:
- Contrast: bright, low light to medium, medium, medium high or high contrast.
- Temperature: warm or cool
The Benefit of Personal Coloring for Men
I dare say that men benefit most from Color Consulting. After all, we, women, rely on many tricks to compensate for the effect of negative colors on our beauty.
An example of this is the power of using makeup in the right tones. Although they are more open, we know that few men still wear makeup on a daily basis.
In addition to makeup, hair colors and accessories (earrings, scarves) are excellent compensation strategies used by the female public.
But what about men?
Typically, they wear a shirt, jacket, blazer or overcoat. From accessories, ties, chains, scarves and glasses.
Therefore, investing in the right pieces that really highlight their beauty makes a big difference in building a male image.
“For a man to know his color palette makes a big difference in the way he presents himself to the world” – Nícolas Marçal, image consultant and specialist in men’s care.
Additionally, I need to remember that color is a design element that communicates. Therefore, if man seeks to transmit the correct messages through his image, investing in the right tones and mastering color psychology is essential.
What changes from the female to the male color test?
As I said, the technical part of the test is the same, whether for men, women, young people, adults and with the most varied skin tones.
But, in fact, there are some particularities in Men’s Personal Coloring that deserve to be highlighted. Shall we go to them?
1. Men and Women: different beauties
Women, in general, have more delicate features. Men, stronger.
Therefore, it’s necessary to train your eyes and be prepared to deal with these differences in the test.
Talking to Nicolas Marçal, he reports:
“What I always say is that you need to train your eyes, because they are very different beauties. When we do the men’s test, many people ask whether it’s necessary to remove the beard or not, whether the beard interferes with the contrast and we always analyze the whole.”
And, in fact, this is a pertinent question! If women take off their makeup to perform the color test, shouldn’t men take off their beards and mustaches?
No!
Think that makeup is something outside of beauty. Beards and mustaches are characteristic of male nature and don’t change the test result.
However, for consultants, it’s necessary to train themselves to look at these differences, as they can cause doubts when analyzing.
2. Beard, hair and mustache (or not)
As I said, men may or may not have a beard, hair and mustache.
Therefore, diagnosing, especially, the client’s contrast and depth stages tends to be more challenging, precisely because in them we see the light and dark in each person’s beauty.
And, think about it with me, the beard especially tends to take up a considerable amount of space on the client’s face. Therefore, it is important to analyze how stains and changes around this area behave.
Just like women, men also want to hide gray hair by coloring their hair. However, unlike the female audience, they don’t always have the necessary repertoire to make this change assertively.
3. Practicality and objectivity
While women love a super complete explanation, full of examples and, sometimes, even subjectivity, men are much more practical and objective.
Their interest is: where will I use this in my life? In what way?
Do you know a cake recipe? Normally, this is how they like to receive our information. Everything explained, but succinctly, clearly and objectively. No frills.
4. They are lazy!
Anyone who’s my Personal Coloring Training student knows: before starting the test, I recommend asking the client what bothers them most about their face. Is it a stain? An expression line? Ask him to point out these characteristics and they will be your focus during the analysis.
Nícolas Marçal, image consultant and partner at Studio Immagine, told me a curious fact about the differences in carrying out Color Consulting for men and women that I found very pertinent to share with you:
“Men are much more concerned about the issue of facial imperfections. So, not everyone reports being bothered by a spot or dark circle and it is we, consultants, who must look for these points to be analyzed during the test” – Nic Marçal.
Our search must be active! We can choose two or three points and show them during the analysis to the client as it’s very important that they also notice the differences between the dimensions of the colors on their face.
5. The makeup thing
Most men are still not fans of makeup. So, we often don’t work on makeup tones with the client. I also instruct my students to discard the respective slides of the color palette or mini color palette, precisely to bring more practicality and objectivity to the client’s daily life.
“There are men who are already fans of foundation and tinted sunscreen. In these cases, we can carry out this analysis. Otherwise, we will make a recommendation based on practicality. Think that men are practical, objective, so our color consultancy should be more surgical too”, adds Nic Marçal.
Conclusion
Analyzing men’s personal coloring is not a big deal! The most important thing is to train your eyes at this beauty, which, yes, is different from that of women, and, in addition, to know how to deliver an objective but complete service to the client.
Explain the characteristics of the color palette, show colors opposite to his beauty and instruct him on which colors to use depending on the environment he is in and the image objective of the moment.
A kiss,
Luciana Ulrich.
